Julie Shaw is a Head of Music and Head of Instrumental Studies in an independent school, and a freelance associate director of music for an adult choir and orchestra. She regularly composes and arranges music and creates music workshops for a wide variety of ensembles including choirs, orchestras, classical chamber groups, pop and rock groups, world music groups such as samba and djembe, guitar and ukulele groups, folk groups and jazz improvisation ensembles. Julie's approach is inclusive and bespoke, writing for all abilities and ages and specialising in combining different genres, different ages, different abilities and different levels of professional or amateur expertise to create exciting and entertaining music. She is an expert in drawing out outstanding performances from amateur and mixed ability groups. She is also a freelance church musician working for several churches across Surrey and London offering singing leadership, band direction, music planning and piano accompanying for services.
What I offer
Conducting and Directing
I am an experienced conductor and director of music, able to work with a wide variety of musical genres. I particularly specialise in combining professional and amateur groups and combining groups of mixed ages and abilities. My approach is warm, engaging and inclusive, with a strong teaching methodology that will help untangle the tricky spots and put all your musicians on the same page.
Composing and Arranging
I write and arrange inventive and innovative original compositions and arrangements for amateur and professional groups of all ages and abilities. My bespoke creations will cater for individual levels of ability across your group. I particularly enjoy crossing genres and creating exciting rhythms drawing on folk, historical and world musics. I will compose to your given brief or for your particular occasion.
Workshops
I have a wide range of experience of workshop creation across a wide range of musical genres including classical music through history, choral singing, orchestral and chamber music workshops and a variety of world music genres, song writing and composing. I can write a workshop for all ages or targetting a particular age range. I can tailor a workshop to a particular piece of music that your group is studying or going to hear in concert.

Conducting, directing and rehearsing
I can conduct your concert or direct your musical show. I can take rehearsals, deputise and run sectional rehearsals. I can rehearse and direct ensembles for all ages and abilities across a wide variety of genres. I can help you plan your programme to suit your musical forces.
Church services
I can direct the music for your special church service and accompany on the piano as well as leading the singing. I can help you plan the music for your wedding, christening or for a funeral. I can guide you through traditional and contemporary options as well as incidental music, and help you through the format of the church liturgy.
Composing
I can write a bespoke piece of music for your musical group or event, or to give as a gift to a loved one. I can write for a wide variety of groups of all ages and abilities including choirs, bands, orchestras, chamber groups and soloists in a wide variety of styles. I particularly enjoy crossing genres and creating exciting rhythmic effects.
Arranging
I can arrange an exisiting piece of music for the musical forces that you have available to you, creating bespoke parts according to the ability of your singers and players. I can tailor the length and style to suit your programme. I can adapt existing accompaniments or write new ones. I can deliver professional scores and parts for rehearsal.
Workshops
I can design, create and lead bespoke music workshops for wide ranging combinations of voices or instruments on a huge variety of themes, including choral workshops, classical music workshops, world music workshops, composing workshops, chamber music days or group improvisation. I can prepare for all ages and abilities and I particularly specialise in creating for mixed ability groups.
Score preparation
I can help you prepare professional musical scores, create dynamic parts and print professional rehearsal packs for choirs, orchestras, bands and chamber groups. I can tidy up and polish existing scores in Sibelius. I can create a new Sibelius template for your own arrangement including your pre-existing musical material.
Rehearsal backing tracks
I can create sequenced rehearsal backing tracks in Logic Pro X from a musical score or from existing midi tracks. I can arrange a new accompaniment or approximate an existing style from an audio track. I can crop, trim and adapt existing backing tracks to suit your format. I can create a template backing track for you to take to a studio to have mastered for a professional performance.
Audio Aids
I can create audio aids for your choir or band from my own scores or from existing musical scores, producing audio files that highlight particular voices, with or without full sequenced orchestral accompaniment or piano accompaniment. I can order and organise your audio aids and deliver folders that you can upload to your choir website for your singers to access online.
